NEW: Rhode Island Unemployment Rate Increases

The RI Department of Labor and Training announced today that the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for September and October 2013 increased to 9.2 percent, up one-tenth of a percentage point from the August 2013 rate of 9.1 percent, but down nine-tenths of a percentage point from the October 2012 rate.
Due to the recent government shutdown, the information from December had been delayed until this month.
The national unemployment rate for October was 7.3 percent, one-tenth of a percentage point higher than the previous month, and down six-tenths of a percentage point over the year.

The number of employed Rhode Island residents dropped 1,900 over the two month period, decreasing to 500,300 in October. From October 2012 to October 2013, the number of employed residents dropped by 5,400.
Rhode Island's October labor force of 550,700 represented drops of 700 from September 2013, 1,500 from August 2013, and 11,700 from October 2012.
