NEW: Representative Morgan Traveling to Turkey to Promote Democratic Principles

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Representative Patricia L. Morgan (R-Dist. 26 West Warwick, Warwick, Coventry) will be traveling to Ankara, Turkey for five days to meet with Turkish dignitaries to promote female and youth participation in government and democratic principles generally. She will be attending the AKP Women's Branch Congress which is held every four years and has plans to meet with Turkey's Prime Minister, Tayyip Erdogan, as well as women political leaders from across Turkey. Current and former women elected officials from Europe, Africa and other Middle Eastern nations have also been invited.

This trip is part of a global effort on the part of the Women’s Democracy Network (WDN), an initiative of the International Republican Institute (IRI), to empower women to actively participate in public life, and thus advance democracy worldwide. Through its global network WDN's goal is to ensure that women all across the world have the capacity and confidence to actively participate in the decision-making processes of their countries, build thriving communities and lasting democracies.

“I am truly honored to have partnered with WDN to participate in their mission to spread democracy and promote female participation in government worldwide,” said Rep. Morgan. “These are issues that are very important to me as a female legislator and a strong believer in individual rights and democracy for all. This should be a great experience and I am eager to meet with my Turkish counterparts. This will be a great opportunity for each of us to learn from each other and emerge as better people and leaders for having done so.”
