NEW: Providence School Board Won’t Approve Teacher Contract

The rocky relationship between the Providence School Committee and Mayor Angel Taveras took another turn Friday as the board notified the city that it had unanimously voted to request that contract negotiations with the teachers union be halted until they are more involved in the process.

The School Committee issued a letter to Taveras that contract negotiations are supposed to include the board.

“The board believes that the PTU collective bargaining agreement contains provisions that are essential to the essence of our educational mission and therefore are to be considered management rights that cannot be assigned, transferred or given away by the School Board,” the letter stated.

The teachers are the only major union that has not reached a contract agreement with the city. On Thursday evening, the two public safety unions (police and fire) overwhelming voted to approve its contract. Local 1033 approved its contract in April.
