The City of Providence this morning began sending layoff notices to police officers, a spokesman confirmed.

Notices will be sent to 78 police officers, according to city spokesman David Ortiz. Unlike the teacher terminations, he said there would not be a mass mailing of pink slips.

“The officers affected will meet one-on-one with HR to discuss their situation, followed by group meetings to connect them with resources available to help them and their families deal with this very difficult situation,” Ortiz said.

The layoffs are meant to save the city $6 million in the Police Department budget next year, as part of a strategy to close a $110 million structural budget deficit.
