“For far too long, too many of Providence’s children, particularly those from minority and impoverished backgrounds, have been slipping through the sizeable achievement gaps that exist in Providence’s public schools,” stated Solomon. “I support the application recently submitted by Mayor Taveras because I strongly believe the addition of an Achievement First Mayoral Academy in Providence will bring new energy and much needed innovation into our long standing efforts to revitalize our public schools.”

“Everyone recognizes that transformational change is required to redirect Providence’s school system on a path towards providing all of our children, regardless of background, with an education that will prepare them to succeed in life,” stated Salvatore. “While the proposed mayoral academy will not solve all of our problems, it holds the potential to serve as a spark that will inspire broader reforms throughout our school system.”

“We applaud Mayor Taveras for submitting this application and showing the bold leadership Providence needs to turn around our underperforming schools,” continued Salvatore.
