NEW: Prosecutors To Seek Death Penalty For Accused Marathon Bomber

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Federal prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against Dzhokar Tsarnaev for his role in the Boston Marathon bombings.

Attorney General Eric Holder made the announcement on the decision Thursday.

Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to the 30 charges levied against him, seventeen of which, including using a weapon of mass destruction to kill, carry the possibility of the death penalty. No trial date has been set.

Last April's Boston Marathon bombings killed three spectators, and wounded more than 250 others. Tsarnaev is also charged with the death of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, who was shot 3 days after the bombings.
