NEW: Online Petition Calls for Lusi to Stay on as Head of Prov. Schools

Monday, April 30, 2012

A Providence public school principal has launched an online petition calling for Mayor Angel Taveras to name interim Superintendent Dr. Susan Lusi the permanent head of the city's school system.

Dr. Gara B. Field, the well-respected principal at Pleasant View Elementary School, started the petition today and has already generated 36 signatures.

"Interim Superintendent Lusi has galvanized positive and productive Labor-Management relations in 9 short months, and she has earned enormous support from administrators, teachers, and families through her steadfast leadership," the petition says. "Dr. Lusi deserves an opportunity to manifest the good work, and ground work she has begun to improve public education in Providence."

Lusi was named interim superintendent after Tom Brady resigned last summer. While Brady clashed with Mayor Taveras during their short time working together, Lusi is believed to have built a stronger relationship with the first-term Mayor.

Lusi is one of four finalists for the position.
