NEW: Occupy Protesters Have 72 Hours to Leave Burnside Park
Thursday, October 27, 2011
Noting that Burnside Park is only supposed to be open from 7:00am to 9pm, Public Safety commissioner Steven Pare today informed Occupy Providence protesters that they have 72 hours to leave the park.
The Commissioner visted the park to hand out letters to protesters this afternoon.
The Occupy Providence movement is nearly two weeks old and the number of people living in the park has steadily increased since the group began sleeping there last Saturday.
This week, Mayor Angel Taveras confirmed that the city would take legal action in order to have the protsters removed from the park.
Asked earlier this week why the city allowed the protesters to sleep in the park in first place, Taveras said, "we never gave them that right."
