North Providence Police Chief John Whiting on Friday was sentenced to six months in prison after being found guilty of stealing $714 in cash from a stripper and soliciting police.

Whiting was accused of stealing the money from a woman following a car chase during Tropical Storm Irene last summer.

After stealing the money, he later told a Pawtucket police officer to take it to Las Vegas. That officer, John Brown, testified against Whiting.

In a statement, Attorney General Peter Kilmartin called the sentence fair and appropriate.

“Today’s sentence closes the door on a tumultuous period for the North Providence Police Department, a department that is made up of good men and women who take pride in the work they do each day to uphold the law and protect the citizens of their community,” he said. “Hopefully the conclusion of this difficult chapter will enable the entire Department to continue moving forward without the dark cloud of suspicion hanging over their administration.”
