NEW: News Conference Set for Providence Schools Labor/Management Pact

Monday, August 27, 2012

Legislative leaders will join with officials from Providence and the Providence school system to outline a first-in-the-nation labor and management partnership initiative supported in part by funding appropriated by the General Assembly.

The news conference will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 29, at the Carl Lauro Elementary School, 99 Kenyon Street, Providence.

President of the Senate M. Teresa Paiva Weed and Speaker of the House of Representatives Gordon D. Fox will discuss the United Providence (UP!) initiative that will team the Providence School Department and the Providence Teachers Union to create a first-of-its-kind in the nation partnership aimed at turning around three struggling city schools. The unique labor-management compact, an education management organization incorporated as a 501(c)(3), will lead intervention efforts at Carl G. Lauro Elementary School, Gilbert Stuart Middle School and Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School.

Others expected to attend the news conference include Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, Providence School Superintendent Susan Lusi, and Providence Teachers Union President Steven Smith.

President Paiva Weed and Speaker Fox requested that the $100,000 appropriation be included in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education budget. The funds will be combined with contributions made by other organizations, including $100,000 from the Rhode Island Foundation, to support the UP! initiative, focusing on some of the city’s lowest performing schools by promoting innovation and fostering a collaborative environment for teaching and learning.

Nothing will change as far as student achievement until the ghetto culture is eliminated. I do not see this happening in the foreseeable future.
