NEW: National Union President to Attend Prov. Teacher Rally
Monday, February 28, 2011
Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, will be attending the Providence Teachers Union rally this Wednesday to protest the recent firing of all of Providence’s public school teachers.
“Mass firings, whether in one school or an entire district, are not fiscally or educationally sound,” Weingarten said. “The mayor and school superintendent owe it to the community and to the students and teachers in Providence to resolve whatever problem they’re dealing with, not by fiat, but by working in a collaborative way.”
Steve Smith, the President of the Providence Teacher's Union, and a councilman will be speaking at the rally. Also in attendance will be President of Rhode Island Federation of Teachers and Health Professionals Frank Flynn, George Nee from the AFL-CIO, and potentially members of other building trade or private sector unions. The rally will take place at 4:30 PM on Wednesday on the steps of City Hall in Kennedy Plaza.
