On the last day of Pope Benedict XVI’s pontificate, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence will offer a Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving for the Holy Father tomorrow, February 28. Catholic school students and the faithful will gather for the noon Mass at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul for this historic occasion as the faithful come together in prayer for the Pope.

The Holy Father announced earlier this month that he would become the first Pope in 600 years to resign from the pontificate.

Bishop Tobin: "A man of great wisdom and holiness"

“Pope Benedict XVI is a man of great wisdom and holiness and he has given everything – his heart and mind, his soul and strength – to the difficult task of leading the Church” said Bishop Tobin. “His resignation is an act of great humility for he understands that the needs of the Church are greater than his own; that ultimately the well-being of the Church is in God’s hands, not the Pope’s. Tomorrow, the faithful of the Diocese of Providence will gather in gratitude for Pope Benedict’s ministry to the Church.”

The public and media are welcome to attend the Mass.
