Following approval from both the House and Senate judiciary committees last week, the General Assembly is expected to take a vote on House, Senate and Congressional voting lines on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

If approved by the full legislature, the redistricting bills (2012-H 7209A, 2012-S 2178A) will redraw voting districts affecting the General Assembly and U.S. House of Representatives, based on the 2010 U.S. Census population changes. The upcoming election cycle will reflect General Assembly-approved changes in political boundaries.

Sen. Michael J. McCaffrey (D-Dist. 29, Warwick) and Rep. Stephen R. Ucci (D-Dist. 42, Johnston, Cranston) served as the co-chairmen of the Special Commission on Reapportionment, which held months of public hearings, presentations and discussions on various reapportionment map alternatives. They also sponsored the bills in both the House and the Senate.
