NEW: Langevin Calling for More Career and Technical Education Funding

Monday, March 12, 2012

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) is launching a Rhode Island’s Skilled Economy (RISE) Tour to advocate for initiatives and create partnerships that will help address the inability of employers to find workers able to fit the needs of expanding industries.

As co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Career and Technical Education Caucus, he has taken a leadership role nationally in working to overcome this obstacle, which business people say has posed a particularly significant challenge in Rhode Island.

The first event will take place on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at 12:30PM at Coventry High School, where Langevin will hold a forum on Perkins Act funding, which gives students access to the latest technology, equipment and training to prepare them for high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand fields. He will also announce a bipartisan initiative he is spearheading to restore federal resources that the school needs. The discussion will take place in the “café” where students in the culinary program are trained, and will be followed by visits to other programs.

Over the coming months, the tour will take Langevin to a variety of venues that can contribute to closing our skills gap and strengthening our economy. He is asking companies, job training facilities and other organizations that want to be involved to contact his office with ideas.
