NEW: Kilmartin Announces $240K for Wind Turbine Project
Wednesday, February 09, 2011
Attorney General Peter Kilmartin announced today that he has directed $240,000 to the completion of the 100kW wind turbine at Fisherman's Memorial State Campground and the construction of a new turbine at the East Matunuck State Beach facility.
The funding is one installment of a 5-year, $1.2 million settlement paid to the State of Rhode Island by American Electric Power Service as part of a $75 million lawsuit stemming from permit infractions by the company in 2007.
Last year's $240,000 installment was used to begin construction of the Fisherman's Memorial turbine -- which will produce 2/3 of the facility's electricity upon completion -- but unforeseen costs of construction and unavailability of other anticipated funding sources left the project approximately $156,000 short. The 2011 installment will cover this cost, while the remaining $84,000 will finance part of a projected $125,000, 10kW turbine at the East Matunuck State Beach Facility. The turbine will generate almost 1/3 of the facility's electricity.
