NEW: GOP State Sen. Wants Review of Part-Time State Employees
Thursday, November 10, 2011
Senate Republicans are calling for a complete review of state employment policies for people classified as “not full time” and the extent of benefits they receive in order to cut state spending.
“While part time workers may provide valuable service to the state, full time benefits, as a matter of state employment policy, should be reserved for full time workers,” said Sen. Dawson T. Hodgson, (R-Dist. 35, East Greenwich, North Kingstown, Warwick).
Currently, state employees working a minimum of 20 hours/week are eligible for the state retirement plan and medical insurance program. Those working at least 16 hours/week can accumulate sick and annual leave benefits.
