Tuesday, August 21, 2012
Education Commissioner Deborah Gist will undergo surgery to remove what is believed to be a benign brain tumor in September.

“Thank you very much for your messages, your thoughts, and your prayers, which have helped me enormously in my recovery,” Gist said in a statement. “I am also grateful for the outstanding team at RIDE that has been working hard to transform education and that will continue to lead these efforts during my recovery. Throughout my recuperation, it has been heartening to know that I have so many friends and colleagues who share with me a tireless commitment to improving the lives of students and families across Rhode Island.”
Governor Chafee released the following statement:
“Commissioner Gist is a valued member of my administration and a tremendous advocate on behalf of all Rhode Island students. I know that the Commissioner faces this challenge with a positive attitude and a tenacious spirit, which will help her make a quick recovery. Stephanie and I will keep her in our thoughts in the coming weeks, and I know that all Rhode Islanders join with us in wishing her well.”
