Due to his innovative work in the field of community policing, Providence Police Chief Dean Esserman has been selected for a national post, Mayor Angel Taveras announced yesterday.

Esserman has been asked to serve on the board of the National Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), which is a federal program aimed at transforming distressed neighborhoods across the United States into vigorous and sustainable communities. On March 23-24, at the organization’s 30th anniversary celebration in Washington DC, Esserman will become the first law enforcement official named to its board.

Community policing is a new approach to law enforcement, which decentralizes police work by assigning officers to work daily in every neighborhood, and builds on relationships with residents and community groups. In a press release, the Mayor’s office credited community policing with what it said has been a decline in violent crime in the city.
