Elsa Duré

Elsa Duré has been named chief executive officer of Rhode Island Mayoral Academies (RIMA), effective September 1. Duré will replace Michael Magee, PhD who has accepted a job as the CEO of the non profit organization Chiefs for Change.

“I’m an immigrant, a daughter of immigrants, and an English language learner. I grew up in an urban community and was highly mobile, frequently changing homes and schools. I am Latina and I am black. The truth is that it’s rare for a child who looks like me and is defined like me to thrive, because our systems and structures are not always able to meet their needs. I succeeded by chance, when I should have succeeded by design. My passion in life is ensuring that more children succeed by design. RIMA is well positioned to help make that happen and it’s an honor to build upon the passionate dedication and work of Mike Magee," said Duré.

Elsa Duré currently holds the position of chief of policy and expansion at RIMA where she supported growth of regional charter schools with mayor led boards in Rhode Island.

“Working closely with Elsa, it’s clear she understands the challenges faced by communities of color and is committed to improving educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their background.  I’m personally excited about the contributions she will undoubtedly make to the city of Providence, and beyond," said NAACP Providence branch President Jim Vincent. Duré is a member of the NAACP.

Prior to RIMA, Duré conducted research at the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University (AISR) where she implemented, managed, and documented projects at  local and regional levels.

Duré has bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in urban education policy from Brown University. She is also a 2015 Pahara NextGen Leader, a program of the Aspen Institute, and serves on the Ethics Committee for the city of Providence.

Rhode Island Mayoral Academies

The goal of Rhode Island Mayoral Academies (RIMA) is to help the growth of mayoral academies throughout the state. RIMA works to accomplish this mission by recruiting school operators and leaders to open mayoral academies; supporting mayoral academies from the application stage through the first years of growth; and cultivating mayors across Rhode Island to become leaders in improving public education.
