NEW: Education Reform Group Issues General Assembly Endorsements

Tuesday, September 04, 2012

The RI-CAN Action Fund, the Rhode Island branch of the 50CAN Action Fund, has issued three endorsements for the 2012 primaries for General Assembly seats in Rhode Island. The 50CAN Action Fund is a 501(c)(4) organization whose mission is to close the achievement gap by raising awareness and advocating for the enactment of public policy changes that support great public schools.

Based on candidate questionnaires and voting records, the RI-CAN Action Fund has endorsed Mia Ackerman, Jon Brien, and Maura Kelly in the 2012 primary race.

Ackerman is a 3-term Cumberland Councilwoman, currently running in the House District 45 Democratic primary. Her opponent is incumbent Rene Menard, who has held the seat since 1989, and is a longtime opponent of education reform. Menard received an F rating on RI-CAN Action Fund’s recently released Legislative Report Card, which can be found on the website.

Jon Brien is an incumbent Democrat, representing House District 50 since 2007. Brien received an A+ rating on RI-CAN Action Fund’s Legislative Report Card. His opponent in the primary is Steve Casey.

Maura Kelly is a Democrat running in the Senate District 5 primary against incumbent Paul Jabour, who has held the seat since 2007. Jabour recently received a C rating on RI-CAN Action Fund’s Legislative Report Card.
