The Texas Congressman in town to raise money for Republican Congressional candidate Brendan Doherty is among several Congressman being investigated for allegedly receiving special mortgage rates from the now-defunct Countrywide Financial, according to the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a nonprofit watchdog group.

According to CREW's website, Congressman Pete Sessions "along with at least three other congressmen, is under investigation for possibly receiving a preferential mortgage rate from Countrywide Financial. Rep. Sessions’ spokesperson said he 'specifically requested that he not be extended any special benefits or treatment from Countrywide' and that he believes 'his simple request was honored.'"

Sessions and Nebraska Congressman Jeff Fortenberry are headlining a fundraiser for Doherty at the Hope Club in Providence this evening.

Earlier in the day, the campaign for Congressman David Cicilline sent an e-mail ripping Doherty for supporting Sessions.

"It’s frankly outrageous that David's Republican opponent is accepting support from the most extreme elements of his Party. Congress has proved to be divisive and radical enough over the past year without sending another vote for the Republican Party line," the message states.

A spokesman for Doherty did not immediately return a request for comment.

Editor's Note: The original version of this post incorrectly stated that Congressman Jeff Fortenberry was from New Hampshire.
