NEW: Doherty Calls for Tax Exempts to Pay Fair Share in Providence

Friday, February 03, 2012

Brendan Doherty, candidate for Congress from Rhode Island’s first Congressional district today called on Brown University and other non-profit property holders within the city of Providence to make meaningful contribution to the City’s financial recovery in recognition of the value of the services that they receive. Doherty has raised the issue of tax fairness in his campaign for Congress and acknowledges a need for fairness in the property tax burden imposed on property owners in Providence.

“Providence must not be allowed to default or declare bankruptcy,” urged Doherty. “As the fortunes of Providence go, the economic outlook for the balance of Rhode Island will follow. Right now, Providence’s financial survival is as much a state issue as it is a municipal issue and if Providence were allowed to fail, the economic devastation and ripple effects might well extend beyond our borders,” continued Doherty.

“We must reform our federal tax code to level the playing field and to give a fighting chance to small businesses. As a candidate for Congress, I also recognize that property taxes place a significant burden on homeowners and small businesses. On both the federal and local levels, the first step to economic reform should be to level the field and eliminate cases of special treatment,” continued Doherty.

“Mayor Taveras is working hard to do the right thing for the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island and I support his efforts. I call on the president and trustees of Brown University to demonstrate the leadership necessary to forge a cooperative agreement to contribute to the economic revival of their City in a meaningful way,” concluded Doherty.
