U.S. Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI), a 1983 alumnus of Brown University, issued the following statement after learning that Dr. Christina H. Paxson, currently the Hughes Rogers Professor of Economic Affairs and the Dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, would serve as the school’s 19th President:

“I would like to commend Brown University on its successful completion of the presidential search process, and also to extend my congratulations to Dr. Christina H. Paxson on her election today. Dr. Paxson brings a wealth of experience and a highly-regarded reputation to Rhode Island. I look forward to working with her in the years ahead as she leaves her own legacy.”

“In addition, I would like to thank Dr. Ruth Simmons for her work over more than a decade as the President of Brown University. Dr. Simmons has achieved countless accolades during her time at the helm of this institution, and I join men and women across Rhode Island today in expressing our thanks for her stewardship.”
