NEW: Cicilline Blasts Doherty Over Support for Pro-Drilling Bill
Friday, October 26, 2012
Congressman David Cicilline today ripped Republican Brendan Doherty's support for a proposal in the U.S. House that could expose the coast of Rhode Island to offshore drilling.
"The fact is that provisions of H.R. 1861 would deem the Bush Administration’s Draft Proposed Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas leasing Program as approved. That program called for five lease sales in the Atlantic Ocean, including one in the North Atlantic planning area, which contains the waters off the coast of Rhode Island," Cicilline said. "I cannot understand why a candidate for Congress in Rhode Island would support legislation that could expose our coastline to Big Oil companies, opening us to the threat of an oil spill and potentially wreaking environmental havoc."

"It could be devastating for people who make their living in the fishing industry."
