Charlestown resident Kevin Maynard has agreed to plead guilty  in federal court to stealing granite gravestones and other items from the Veterans' Memorial Cemetery for use at his home as garage flooring, said United States Attorney Peter Neronha.

The Investigation

On April 23, 2015, a VA-OIG agent and Rhode Island State Police detective went with Maynard to his home where they found over 150  veterans' grave markers being used as flooring for a shed and two garages.

The investigators also found additional markers on the property as well as a box of American flags that were allegedly stolen from the Cemetery.

Government regulations state that all Government-furnished headstones, markers, and medallions remain in the property of the United States Government perpetuity and that "destruction, mutilation, defacement, injury, or removal of any monument, gravestone, or other structure within the limits of any national cemetery is prohibited."

Pleading Guilty

According to court documents, Maynard will plead guilty as charged by way of information with theft of government property. The arraignment is set for July 13 before Magistrate Judge Patricia Sullivan.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John McAdams.
