NEW: Chafee Picks Three for Regional Fishery Council

Governor Lincoln Chafee has submitted three nominees for the New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC).
The NEFMC, an intergovernmental organization responsible for managing fishing activity within 200 miles of the New England coast, will have four vacant seats come August 11 of this year. In a letter to Eric Schwaab, the Assistant Administrator for Fisheries at the National Marine Fisheries Service, Chafee nominated Rhode Islanders Theodore Platz, Setch Macinko, and Jason Jarvis for the soon to be vacant positions.

He is already a member of the NEFMC’s monkfish and skate advisory panels, and frequently attends meetings of the full council.
Setch Macinko, a Professor with the University of Rhode Island’s graduate program in Marine Affairs, has local an extensive background in marine fisheries. He has been a member of the Rhode Island Fisheries Management Council since 2002, and has been a member of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council’s Science and Statistical Committee since 1996. He has spent time as fishing commercially for Alaskan crab, and is preparing to return to work as a commercial fisherman in Rhode Island.
Jason Jarvis is a lifetime fishing enthusiast. He grew up fishing recreationally, but now holds a 100-ton captain’s license and a commercial fishing license. He has worked aboard numerous commercial fishing boats and has attended a number of NEFMC meetings.
Before making the nominations, the governor’s office consulted extensively with leading figures in the fishing industry. The local fishing community expressed strong support of all three nominees.
