NEW: Brown Poll Shows Mixed Feelings Towards Taveras

A new poll from the Alfred Taubman Center for Public Policy at Brown University revealed today that 48 percent of Providence voters rate Mayor Angel Taveras's job performance as excellent or good, while 44 percent rate his performance as only fair or poor. Roughly a quarter of respondents said they had a less favorable opinion of Tavares now than they did at the start of his administration.

When asked about the mayor's controversial decision to close four Providence public schools, nearly 56 percent said they disagree or stongly disagree with the decision.

The survery is based on a citywide random sample of 435 registered voters in Providence.

According to the poll, Barack Obama's approval rating among providence voters is at 56 percent, which is higher than his average rating in national polls.

The poll also found that 86 percent of voters believe the city's economy is not recovering.
