NEW: $230 Million in Unclaimed Property in RI

Friday, October 14, 2011

The Rhode Island Treasury’s Unclaimed Property division has partnered with MissingMoney.com in order to streamline the search-and-claim process, General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo announced today. The state currently holds about $230 million in unclaimed property – including inactive financial accounts, the contents of safe deposit boxes, stocks and dividends and other financial items.

“[The] new search function makes it easier than ever to reunite Rhode Islanders with property that is rightfully theirs,” Raimondo said. “The system’s electronic information matching capabilities will enable the unclaimed property staff to process requests more quickly.”

Rhode Islanders can search for their property through the RI treasury site [www.treasury.ri.gov], or for missing property in other states through the MissingMoney database [MissingMoney.com]. Once a property is claimed and supporting information is provided, a claim number is automatically assigned.

“As General Treasurer, it’s my job to keep these properties safe until I can return them to their rightful owners,” Raimondo concluded. “I encourage all Rhode Islanders to search Treasury’s database for property that may be theirs.”
