NEW: 211 Calls for Help Rise to Historic Levels

In the past year, the needs of Rhode Islanders have grown exponentially, and so has the number of calls to 2-1-1 for help. For the month of February alone, the total volume of calls has risen 10% from 15,926 in 2011 to 17,550 in 2012. Additionally, in the past year, 2-1-1 has seen a drastic 1,003% increase in callers looking for foreclosure prevention assistance. Online presence of 2-1-1 has also increased this year by 15% due to increased awareness of the service.

“United Way 2-1-1 in Rhode Island is free, confidential and available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to individuals and families in critical need of assistance,” said Anthony Maione, UWRI president and CEO. “The volume of calls is a testament to both the increased needs in our communities and the success of our public awareness efforts.”

Some major needs that were identified during the month of February include financial assistance, housing, foreclosure prevention, food, and health information. Many callers inquired about financial assistance concerning utilities and rent among other

“We know that many people are hurting these days,” Maione added. “However, there is no reason that anyone should not call us for help. We keep our finger on the pulse of what resources are available to people in need to help them avert further crisis.”
