Anjan Dutta-Grupa, the founder and president of the Middletown-based Advanced Solutions for Tomorrow (ASFT), pleaded guilty this Thursday to his participation in a multi-million dollar kickback scheme.

From 1996 to January 2011, Dutta-Grupa used his subcontractors to funnel at least $8 million to Ralph Mariano, a senior engineer with the United States Navy’s Naval Sea Systems (NAVSEA), and his family to ensure continued funding of existing naval contracts and other work orders supposedly to be completed by ASFT. Additionally, at least $1,200,000 of the money that was paid to subcontractors was carefully funneled back to SIC, another Dutta-Gupta owned corporation.

Dutta-Gupta now faces up to 15 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000 or three times the value of all the bribe payments—whichever is greater. His co-defendant, Ralph Mariano, is currently awaiting trial.  The sentence will be handed down by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Mary M. Lisi, and is scheduled for December 9, 2011.
