Just Thinking …

Last week I asked to be clued in about the attraction Rhode Islanders have for going out to breakfast. The overwhelming majority of you told me that it’s more of a social event than anything else. After all it is just bacon, eggs, pancakes and coffee … not exactly grilled pizza at Al Forno … if you catch my drift.

That certainly was one nasty stretch of weather back there early last week. I haven’t felt quite that caged in since the Great Flood last spring.

While the Red Sox have not been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, they are certainly on life support and the plug is dangling half way out of the socket.

Let's talk hurricanes

Hurricane Trivia Quiz #1: The quizzes been tough lately so here’s a real softball. What was the last hurricane to make landfall here in Southern New England?

Hurricane “Danielle” passed several hundred miles east of here on Monday but the swells from the storm spelled tragedy for a few people along the coast who sadly were caught unaware of the power of the sea and on the flip side the breakers were a boon to local surfers.

Kudos go out again this week to GoLocalProv’s investigative team for continuing to break significant stories concerning questionable if not illegal practices in local and state government. Local TV stations and newspapers used to do the job. But no longer.

Which team has your vote for the biggest surprise in baseball this year? The Rays? Atlanta? Texas? My vote has to go to the Cincinnati Reds, as of yesterday six games in front of the Cardinals in the N.L. Central.

Hurricane Trivia Quiz #2: Quite a bit tougher but any “weather nut” should be able to reel off this answer quickly. Name the next five storms and years in descending order. Hint: The list ends with “Carol” in 1954.

One of our favorite vacations is to take a cruise to Bermuda either out of Boston or New York. Over the years we’ve run into some rough weather on that route, including Hurricane “Bob” in 1991. While it was thrilling when I was younger, I can’t say I’d like to do that again especially with “Earl” headed up this way.

My social network is going to hell in a hand basket lately. Sure hope Jiggers in EG reopens real soon.

Talking football

Everyone, including yours truly, has pointed out how pre-season football rarely is a predictor of what happens during the regular season but doesn’t the Patriots' lack of a consistent pass rush scare you? Arguably it was their Achilles’ heel last year and it hasn’t improved much during this pre season. Do you think Bill is sandbagging the rest of the league on this one? Not likely.

Hurricane Trivia Quiz #1 Answer: Go to your room for a “time out” if you got this wrong. Hurricane “Bob” in 1991.

Hurricane Trivia Quiz #2 Answer: How soon we forget. Next in line is “Gloria” in 1985. Followed by “Belle” in 1976, “Donna” in 1960, “Edna” in 1954 and, of course, “Carol” in 1954.

Labor Day coming late this year has the school openings schedule all over the place this year. Some kids are already back while others won’t be in class until sometime next week. It’s hard to believe there was a time when EVERYONE went back the day after Labor Day, no matter what.

Oooooops … gotta go! The I can hear the big yellow bus coming down the street … oh, I forgot, I haven’t had to catch it for well over 50 years!

P.S. Watch for my updates on Hurricane “Earl” all this week as each day I will give you my latest thinking on where I think the storm is headed.
