The Pawtucket delegation of the General Assembly, Pawtucket Red Sox President Mike Tamburro, and PawSox General Manager Lou Schwechheimer will meet at the State House tomorrow at 4 p.m. to honor late PawSox owner Ben Mondor. He passed away last October at age 85, and was saluted statewide for his guidance of the Pawtucket Red Sox franchise and its positive impact on Rhode Island.

Mondor took over the PawSox in 1977, and his revitalization of the franchise was one of the great tales of modern-day baseball.  He turned the dank and dingy McCoy Stadium, home of the PawSox, into one of the most fan-friendly confines in America.  Mondor was a two-time winner of the International League Executive of the Year award – in 1982 and again in 1999 – and was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame and International League Hall of Fame in 2004 and 2008, respectively. During his time with the PawSox, Mondor oversaw an almost tenfold increase in spectator support. His current staff members have also won national baseball executives of the year awards, continuing his legacy.
