The Rhode Island Tea Party is calling on voters to vote against all four ballot questions on today’s ballot.

The four questions ask voters if they want to delete “plantations,” from the state name, approve a $78 million bond for new buildings at URI and Rhode Island College, an $84.7 million bond for highway work, and a $14.7 million bond for the purchase of open space land.

“Our state government is in dire financial straits,” the Tea Party said in a statement. “This is not the time to load even more debt on the future taxpayers of Rhode Island - meaning our children. This is the time to defer non-critical expenditures of all types in both state and local governments.”

As for the state’s name, the Tea Party said the use of the word plantations, in the context of the state name, refers to farms and “never had anything at all to do with slavery.”

“The fact that the General Assembly spent time passing this bill while leaving unresolved such important issues as closing the budget deficit without financial gimmickry or tax increases demonstrates that the Democrat-dominated legislature is not serious about dealing with the real issues that affect the lives of Rhode Islanders today,” the group said.
