Kerry King Addresses Pension Reform

The Founder’s Club of the Rhode Island Statewide Coalition (RISC) met Friday to discuss the state’s economy. During the meeting, Dr. Leonard Lardaro of URI presented a Rhode Island Economic Outlook where he emphasized that the state continues to be mired in severe recession; some signs show that a bottom may be in sight, but the recovery is likely to be weak and recent job losses are likely to be permanent.
In a question and answer session that followed, Kerry King, Independent Republican candidate for Rhode Island General Treasurer supported the notion for statewide cost reductions. King stressed that to eliminate the red ink that exists throughout the state, the unsustainable cost of public sector union pension plans must be brought under control. King said, “I have a specific, comprehensive plan for pension reform that can be reviewed on my Web site... www.kingfortreasurer.com.”
In his remarks, Dr. Lardaro emphasized that Rhode Island must stress tax reform and reforming its cost structure, which includes downsizing the General Assembly, providing the governor with a line item veto, and consolidation of municipal services.
