Arthur, the first tropical cyclone of the 2014 Hurricane Season, has formed as expected off the Florida east coast. Right now it is a minimal tropical storm with peak sustained winds near 40mph but is expected to intensify over the next day or two likely reaching hurricane strength (74mph or higher) before it approaches the North Carolina coast late Thursday and early Friday, Independence Day.

It poses a significant threat to the North Carolina outer banks, something that is not needed anytime but especially for vacationers there on the 4th of July weekend. It appears that any affects for us from Arthur will be in the form of rough seas and heavy surf at our beaches this weekend as it passes well southeast of Nantucket on Saturday.

Otherwise, our holiday weekend weather should feature scattered showers and thunderstorms on the 4th as a cool front moves through the area. That should be followed by sunny, warm and less humid conditions over the weekend as Arthur passes out to sea.
