John Ghiorse: Hurricane Irma Update Tuesday AM
Tuesday, September 05, 2017
As of this morning Irma has become a powerful Category 4 hurricane with top sustained winds of 150 mph. It will be affecting the Leeward Islands during the next day and is likely to continue on a general westerly path toward the United States.
Long range forecast models continue to forecast the storm to track through the Bahamas by the weekend ... after that it is very uncertain whether it will continue into the Gulf of Mexico or turn northward, hitting Florida or perhaps further up the East Coast. A sharp turn out to sea is still possible but seems less likely as time goes by.
We must remember that the storm is over 2000 miles away from New England ... so we are still in a watch and wait mode ... and likely will be for the next few days.
