This story is a little too shallow to be fair. Rhode Island's business community had every opportunity to build relationships with the RIGOP and its potential candidates as soon as the last election cycle ended. A new candidate has a lot to do and has to go find interested parties who won't have a conflict of interest. You should ask yourself what consultants and marketing firms made themselves available. The incumbent should be expected to source here because it's easier for them. The challenger has to make the most of much more limited resources and, in this case, his own money versus the incumbent's contribution pipeline. One mistake Mr Riley made was only putting about 119,000 in his account initially. Allow me to speculate that If he had just put 500,000 in there right off the bat he would have been pitched by the best talent and resources in the state immediatly.

I havent seen a single ad, press release, presentation or mailer from these candidates that could not have been produced BETTER by the fine marketing and design firms here in RI. The creative industry is actually one of RI's strengths. Would be nice if the candidates issues RFPs for the work and allowed RI firms a shot at it.

And when I say mistake,I don't say so to criticize. What also has to be remembered is the challenger was embarking on a major campaign for the first time and the incumbent is on I think his seventh and an edge with all of the inside Rhode Island resources.

Captain Blacksocks you are correct that RI has outstanding talent and capabilities, really world class. But remember DC and Providence went out of state to get an orange P? Once it's reported that a prospect has put 119,00 in a campaign account and its in the newspaper, if you don't go get that business that's on you. I used a local firm for a lot of my signs because of time and a word of mouth referral. But GOP-challengers also have to maximize the effort any way they can. They don't have the incumbents ATM machine.

Any number of RI marketing or design firms could have done something more effective than the Orange P (whatever happened to that?), and at a lower cost I bet. I don't fault RI candidates for going out of state to get their ads and PR done, if they really believe those resources don't exist in RI. But they surely do.

@Blacksocks, They do, but it is their responsibility to be easy to find and competitive, especially with challengers who don't have the special interest money that favors incumbents.
