‘Interlink’ Opens at TF Green Airport

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

The Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) is set to open InterLink, a new transportation hub on October 27.

InterLink will integrate travel to, from and around Rhode Island by connecting key methods of transportation in one location. InterLink will feature easy access to T.F. Green Airport, RIPTA bus services, rental car companies and the MBTA commuter rail trains between Warwick, Providence and Boston.

"RIAC, working together with project partners RIDOT, FHWA, and the rental car operators want to ensure travelers a first-class customer experience," said Kevin A. Dillion, President & CEO of RIAC.

InterLink is located at 700 Jefferson Boulevard, less than a mile away from T.F. Green Airport. Direct access to the airport terminal will be through an elevated and enclosed skywalk (see below map). Car rental operators working in the airport terminal will close their counters on October 26 and will relocate to the new Customer Service Building in Interlink the morning of October 27.

InterLink carried a $267 million price tag and was funded by a combination of federal, state and private sector funds.

The idea for this innovative project began with former U.S. Senator Lincoln Chafee and his late father, former Senator John Chafee, who secured $25 million for the project through the 1998 Transportation Bill.

The project was designed by Jacobs Engineering Group with construction manager Gilbane Building Co. and PB Americas serving as project manager. RIAC collaborated with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation to ensure integration into RI's transportation system.
