A typical spring Thursday morning on the University of Rhode Island's turned confusing, terrifying, and tense, as a student outburst in a classroom in the university's Chafee Hall provoked a panic that he had a gun. An alert text sent to URI students was quickly spread and thousands and thousands of Rhode Islanders and those farther away watched and waited for news.

As panic spread along social media networks (and the traffic to URI's home page crashed the site), the RI State Police issued its first official statement.

While social media speculation flew across Twitter and Facebook, law enforcement officials searched Chafee Hall and emerged, wtih URI President Dooley, to give an official lift to the lockdown and answer questions.

After the lockdown was lifted, students returned to classes, but the shock waves of yet another threat of gun violence echoed both in and beyond Rhode Island.
