Thursday, August 25, 2011
Serve Rhode Island calls for vounteers in preparation for Hurricane Irene. The community organization is looking to volunteers to sign up now to be deployed to critical areas of need in the storm's aftermath and the organization has establsihed an online signup.
Volunteers will likely be needed for the following tasks:
staffing shelters
debris removal
mucking gutting flooded structures - cleanup
distribution of food and water
administrative and phone assistance
coordinating/registering volunteers
assisting local EMAs in recovering from the storm
assisting nonprofit agencies, including RIVOAD to respond to community needs
"RI will be experiencing a hurricane or hurricane related event. Although it is too early to accurately predict, it appears the storm will bring strong winds, heavy rain and flooding. The worse case scenario brings it through RI during the period of high tide on late Saturday and early Sunday morning, but the timing of the storm is not certain yet. The potential exists for 6"-12" of rain and winds in excess of 100 mph," said Bernie Beaudreau of Serve Rhode Island.
Hurricane Irene can be tracked online and real-time via StormPulse.
