The Rhode Island House last night passed a law making failure to wear a seatbelt a primary offense.

A similar bill has already been approved in the Senate.

Current law makes failure to wear a seatbelt a secondary offense, meaning that drivers who aren’t will only be cited if they are stopped for a primary offense—running a red light or speeding.

Under the legislation, police can stop drivers just for failing to wear a seatbelt. Those drivers could face fines of $75. If signed into law by Governor Lincoln Chafee, the new law would take effect immediately.
