Leaders of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities in Rhode Island came together yesterday to urge the members of their congregations and the public at large to donate to a fund for emergency winter shelters maintained by the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless.

“It is my prayer that all persons of faith will consider what they can do and then do just a little bit more,” said Rev. Dr. Don Anderson, head of the Rhode Island Council of Churches. “Responding to this crisis is not optional for persons of faith but part of our call to radical hospitality.”

He added: “The faith community cannot and should not do this alone. There must be even a greater concerted effort by business, nonprofits, and government working together to get beyond this crisis to a point where every Rhode Islander has a safe and affordable place to live.”

A recent count found that there was nearly a 300-bed shortfall in the state’s network of emergency winter shelters. An estimated $40,000 is needed to open up a new shelter at the former Carter Day Center in Providence, which is owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese.
