Happy Fourth of July, Rhode Island!
Thursday, July 04, 2013
In this smallest of states, we are one million citizens who occupy the land colonized with a new notion of freedom, a lively experiment in democracy, and a wide streak of tolerance. We were the first colony to declare our independence from the Crown and the last to sign the US Constitution. On America's Independence Day, let's remember our complex Colonial heritage, our deep agrarian roots, our great Industrial past, our waves of immigration, and the motto that makes us look forward to the ongoing experiment founded here by Roger Williams, in the hospitable embrace of the Narragansett people. That motto, of course, is Hope.
