Guest MINDSETTER™ Rep. Canario: Reverse The Urban Growth Smart Tax Credits
Friday, October 07, 2016
I became very angry when I read that Urban Growth Smart was being awarded $3.6 million in tax credits by the Commerce Corporation. This is another example of corporate welfare being given to a well-connected insider who will become richer off of taxpayer dollars, and a person who is an already documented slumlord and tax evader across the country.
There was no transparency or public input into this decision even though it will be funded with the public’s money. Taxpayer money is a sacred thing in our society and should never be wasted. That’s why I voted against the Governor’s tolling plan and why I am so angry about giving Urban Growth Smart more taxpayer money.
Instead of giving Lance Robbins more public money, the many small businesses he drove into the ground at the Hope Artist Village, and the numerous struggling small businesses in our state, could have used this public investment to thrive in our state.

If reelected, I will sponsor legislation to prohibit anyone with such an unethical and illegal professional record from being awarded public dollars that could help so many small businesses and middle class residents in Rhode Island.
