Guest MINDSETTER™ Mendelsohn:  Assistant Principals-The Versatile School Leaders

Thursday, March 31, 2016

Jonathan Mendelsohn

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and the Federation of School Administrators has declared April 11th-15th National Assistant Principals Week. Behind every successful principal and school there are assistant principals who work tirelessly and with little fanfare ensuring students and faculty are safe, deliver quality teaching and learning, and that the bells run on time. It is not an overstatement to say that assistant principals play an integral and critical role in the day-to-day operations of a school. Simply stated, schools would not function effectively without them.

Assistant principals emerged on the education landscape in the early 1900s as schools became urbanized and more complex (Glanz, 2004). Historically, they’ve played a supportive role to the principal and continue to do so today. The current demands for accountability and positive school outcomes have made the assistant principalship an increasingly challenging leadership position. These challenges involve juggling a multitude of building management and instructional leadership tasks. They include supervising before and after-school activities, conducting classroom walkthroughs, running attendance, data, and PBIS committees, organizing mandated state testing, handling daily discipline, mediating student conflicts, responding to teachers’ concerns, responding to emergencies, supervising lunch duty, dealing with building maintenance issues, handling teacher evaluations, meeting with parents, establishing community partnerships, and delivering school-based professional development. This is not an exhaustive list of their current duties and responsibilities but it is indicative of what the job entails. It should be noted that on a given day it is not uncommon for an assistant principal to be involved in each and every one of the aforementioned tasks. Despite the myriad of challenges and pressure assistant principals deal with on a daily basis; they endeavor to make a positive contribution to their learning community.

If you work with or know an assistant principal, please take a moment during National Assistant Principals Week to thank them for all they do in creating a safe and orderly school environment, and improving the lives of students and our educational system.

Jonathan Mendelsohn has been an assistant principal for 71/2 years and is currently working at Central High School in Providence. He was a 2016 finalist for The Rhode Island Association of School Principals (RIASP) Assistant Principal of the Year Award.
