Rep. Joseph S. Almeida

Rep. Joseph S. Almeida today submitted a resolution condemning the violence at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina Wednesday night. Twenty-one year old Dylann Storm Roof is alleged to have gunned down nine people who had been attending a prayer meeting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, including Rev. Clementa Pinkney, who was also a state senator. The incident is believed to be a hate crime.

Representative Almeida (D-Dist. 12, Providence) called the crime an “abominable act” that served as a devastating reminder of the progress that still needs to be made in addressing racism inAmerica.

“Our country is in mourning for more black lives that have been senselessly taken,” said Representative Almeida. “Fifty years after the civil rights movement, it’s unthinkable that this is still happening, that people are still being shot and killed just for the color of their skin, and in a church, which is supposed to be a place of peace. My heart goes out to the families of the victims and the black community in Charleston. I hope that our nation can find ways to address the deep-seated causes of racism and heal the deep wounds that centuries of it have caused.”
