For nearly ten years Miguel Luna was an extraordinary member of the Providence City Council. He was the man that those in need could count on for help.

Luna was a person who cared – he cared about people who needed jobs, he cared about families that needed housing, and he worked for parents to improve the plight of their children. Residents in the 9th Ward knew he cared, but over the years he became a real Providence-wide resource for those most in need regardless of the neighborhood they lived in.

He was an amazing juxtaposition. When workers fought for protection or higher wages – Luna was there to carry a sign and led demonstrations. Equally, when business leaders were working to progress a project that benefited the City and put people to work – Luna was willing to fight to push the project forward.

In an era of political polarization – Miguel Luna brought people together.

At a time when politics are about fragmentation, Luna, who was an unyielding liberal, was about bringing people together to create jobs, improve wages and defeat poverty.

In an era in which the tenants of public service sometimes seem lost, Luna was a compassionate man who sought justice. His legacy is guide to those who continue.

Luna never personally benefited. He personally sacrificed.

Providence is a better place as a result of the caring, energy and passion of Miguel Luna.
