EXCLUSIVE: Hemond to be Named to Providence School Committee
Friday, August 12, 2011

Hemond, who is in his final year at Roger Williams Law, has a Bachelor's Degree from Providence College.
Hemond will fill the spot left vacant by former School Board President Kathy Crain, who resigned last month.
Since taking office, Mayor Angel Taveras has made three new appointments to the School Committee: Hemond, Keith Oliveira and Natalia Rosa-Sosa. He also reappointed Nina Pande, Magaly Sanchez and Phil Gould to the Board earlier this year.
Gould resigned in June.
Weeks later, the Mayor made headlines when he supported a last minute General Assembly bill that stripped the School Board of its ability to negotiate a teachers contract.
On Tuesday, the teachers overwhelmingly voted in favor of a new contract that guarantees no layoffs for three years.
Hemond could not be reached for comment.
Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Nina Pande was appointed by Mayor Taveras.

Great pick by the mayor. Little league parents know that Nick has been coaching our kids for a long, long time and is a young and passionate education for our public schools. He went to Classical and knows how important good schools are.

@Buckner, you let the ball slip between your legs again, big guy. I meant "Nick is a young and passionate advocate for education in our public schools." Which he is. So do your homework before you speak of which you dont know. Do we need more young people involved in our schools - especially those who recently left our schools, coach our kids and who are in law school now? Answer is obvious.

Another absurd appointment by the mayor. Are people blind to what the Alcalde is trying to accomplish? A lobbyist on the School Board. IS Taveras a complete moron?

You must be right. Having a young, passionate public school grad who coaches our kids and is in law school is a terrible idea. The perfect example of who we dont want involved in city government. what was this mayor thinking?????????

So. There are 150000 people living In the city of providence. I suspect that a person in law school is probably a little too busy to be worrying about the state of the city's schools. Is this the best you guys can do? Has the world just gone crazy?

Mr. Hemond is a a great asset to the city of Providence. Mr. Buc Kner your argument becomes completely illegitimate when you bring up that he is a yankee's fan....what's the point? Also that he doesn't live in the city...also not true. Wouldn't receive any A plus grades from Providence teachers for that type of research, huh boss? He is a LEADER which is what the city of Providence needs now more then ever. You don't have to like him, but he'll do a great job, by bringing knowledge, and passion for not just schools but the entire city of Providence.

Heaven save us from having a young (under 30) professional who went k-12 in the Providence schools, coaches little league and wants to volunteer his time to serve his city. I bet he has a secret plan to skim money from the Sodexho and Aramark contracts into the pockets of the dark forces he really works for. Surely he isn't interested in helping kids have a brighter future!
