Mayor Jorge Elorza declared November "Epilepsy Awareness Month" in Providence at Vartan Gregorian Elementary School. Epilepsy Awareness Month is observed across the United States during the month of November.

Elorza was joined by Interim Superintendent Chris Maher and Marisol Garcia, executive director of The Matty Fund.

“I am pleased to declare November Epilepsy Awareness Month in Providence on behalf of The Matty Fund. As the only Resource Center in Rhode Island for families living with epilepsy, I recognize the value they bring to almost 10,000 Rhode Islanders living with epilepsy. Their mission is to provide family resources, raise awareness, promote patient safety and improve the quality of life for children and families living with epilepsy," said Elorza.

The declaration is the most recent in a series of events and meetings planned by The Matty Fund this month to raise awareness for the most common neurological condition in childhood and the estimated 3 million Americans living with epilepsy.

“We are extremely grateful for Mayor Elorza’s support of helping us raise epilepsy awareness throughout Providence and for sharing this awareness at Vartan Gregorian Elementary School.  According to Epilepsy Foundation of America, 50% of childhood epilepsy syndromes occur between 0-5 years, so it is important to raise awareness in this cohort”, said Garcia.

The Matthew Siravo Memorial Foundation is a non-profit organization found in memory of Matthew Siravo who passed away from epilepsy in May of 2003.
