EDITORIAL: Video of Woman Being Beaten and Police Report Don’t Add Up
Tuesday, July 12, 2016
The video of the police officer in Providence dragging a woman by her hair and repeatedly punching her in the face is beyond disturbing. Maybe more disturbing is that the police report of the evening seem to reflect an entirely different event.
The video shows an uncooperative woman, being non-responsive to combative with a police officer. The officer identified in the Providence Police report is Patrolman Place. Some things are unclear in the video, but too many are viewable.
In reviewing the video, it appears that Patrolman Place has completely lost all control. The way he treats a woman who is significantly smaller than him and unarmed is brutal.

We can plainly see him drag her down the stairs and then drag her somewhere around 50 feet by the hair. We see the officer punch her at least four-times in the face with tremendous force in the face.
If she was a significant threat, it is amazing that he never tries to handcuff her - ever.
Being a police officer today is beyond difficult. The front line is often chaotic and brutal. But, the realities of the street do not excuse this type of behavior or this type of cover-up.
It is imperative that the Providence Police complete a comprehensive review and issue a report. We are all waiting.
